Are the Activities Safe?
YES. We have an excellent safety record and intend to keep it that way. Since Discovery began in 1989 we have taken over 14,000 people on courses without serious incident.
Some Outdoor Activities have a feeling of being dangerous - and that is part of their appeal - however, in fact they are very safe.
Our safety policy and practice is very rigorous and will be the main objective of each course that we run. Our safety records are available for inspection by group leaders.
Will there be other groups there?
VERY UNLIKELY. Groups will always have sole use of the centre. We believe that this is an important element of a Peat Rigg course, to avoid distractions and allow you to get on with what you came to do. On rare occasions two small groups may wish to share the use of the centre to make it financially viable.
Do I need to be fit?
NO. Each course is designed and continually monitored to ensure that the level of challenge and physical activity is suitable for all members of the group. However, due to the nature of most Outdoor Activities there will always be some physical element. If you have any medical concerns you are advised to visit your Doctor before coming on a course.
Is Peat Rigg inspected by anybody?
YES. We are inspected by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority to ensure that our procedures and practices result in a safe, well run centre. Phone 029 2075 5715 or visit aala.org.uk to check our details.
We also hold a Fire Certificate and have an annual Fire Safety Inspection by North Yorkshire Fire Service
Our kitchens, dining room and food storage areas are also annually inspected by Ryedale District Council Environment Health Department.
We also welcome inspection visits from any LEA advisors, EVC's or prospective group leaders.
Can I get a mobile signal?
VERY UNLIKELY. There is virtually no mobile reception around Peat Rigg.
However, there is a payphone at the centre ( 01751 417381 ) should you want to contact the outside world!
What Rules are there?
On your arrival at Peat Rigg, your Course Director will give your group a short induction. This will outline the few, common sense rules that we need everybody to follow to keep your groups safe and for everybody to enjoy themselves. We will also cover the fire safety procedures, give an overview of the site and explain the programme for your course.
What is included in a Peat Rigg Course?
Unless otherwise stated, all Peat Rigg courses include full board accommodation; which means three substantial meals per day and comfortable dormitory-style accommodation, with all bedding provided. Also, a full outdoor activity programme (including evenings), use of all specialist equipment and all transportation once you arrive. Transportation from your base to Peat Rigg can be arranged at very reasonable rates.
Are there vegetarian meals?
YES. We cater for any special dietary requirements that you may have. But please remember to include that information in your individual details form.
I have a group of friends that would like to try some outdoor activities, is this possible?
YES. We are happy to organise a course that meets your needs. The minimum group size is twelve.
